Healthcare IT Glossary

Plain-English definitions of common healthcare technology terms and acronyms.

HIMS

Hospital Information Management System

A comprehensive software platform that manages all operational, clinical, and administrative functions of a hospital. HIMS covers everything from patient registration and appointment scheduling to billing, inventory, and reporting. It serves as the central nervous system of a hospital's digital operations, connecting all departments and workflows.

EHR

Electronic Health Record

A digital version of a patient's complete medical history, maintained across time and accessible by authorized providers. Unlike paper charts, EHRs enable real-time sharing of patient data across departments and facilities. They include diagnoses, medications, lab results, imaging, clinical notes, and treatment plans.

EMR

Electronic Medical Record

A digital record of a patient's health information within a single healthcare organization. While often used interchangeably with EHR, EMRs are typically limited to one practice or hospital. They contain clinical data like diagnoses, prescriptions, and lab orders for that specific provider.

ABDM

Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission

India's national initiative to create a unified digital health infrastructure. ABDM enables the creation of ABHA health IDs, digital health records, and consent-based data sharing between healthcare providers. Launched by the Government of India, it aims to make health records portable and accessible.

ABHA

Ayushman Bharat Health Account

A unique 14-digit health ID issued under ABDM that allows Indian citizens to link and access their health records digitally. ABHA enables patients to share their medical history with any ABDM-registered healthcare provider. It serves as a unified health identifier similar to Aadhaar for healthcare.

NABH

National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers

India's premier healthcare quality accreditation body under the Quality Council of India. NABH accreditation certifies that a hospital meets defined standards for patient safety, clinical care, and operational excellence. Hospitals seeking NABH certification need comprehensive audit trails and quality documentation.

OPD

Outpatient Department

The section of a hospital where patients receive diagnosis and treatment without being admitted overnight. OPD management in HMS includes appointment scheduling, queue management, consultation tracking, and prescription generation. It's typically the highest-volume department in any hospital.

IPD

Inpatient Department

The section of a hospital where patients are formally admitted for treatment requiring overnight stays. IPD management includes bed allocation, nursing workflows, treatment tracking, diet management, and discharge planning. A robust IPD module is critical for hospitals with surgical and intensive care units.

TPA

Third Party Administrator

An organization that processes insurance claims on behalf of insurance companies and hospitals. TPAs handle claim verification, pre-authorization, cashless treatment approvals, and settlement. Integration with TPAs in HMS automates the insurance billing workflow and reduces claim rejections.

DICOM

Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine

The international standard for transmitting, storing, and sharing medical images like X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and ultrasounds. DICOM ensures that medical images from any manufacturer's equipment can be viewed on any DICOM-compatible viewer. It's essential for any hospital's radiology department.

PACS

Picture Archiving and Communication System

A medical imaging system that stores, retrieves, and distributes diagnostic images digitally, eliminating the need for physical film. PACS integrates with DICOM to receive images from modalities like CT, MRI, and X-ray machines. It enables radiologists to view and report on images from any workstation.

HL7

Health Level Seven

An international standard for the exchange of clinical and administrative data between healthcare software systems. HL7 defines message formats for patient demographics, orders, results, billing, and more. It enables different hospital systems (LIS, RIS, HMS) to communicate with each other.

FHIR

Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources

A modern standard by HL7 for exchanging healthcare data electronically, using web technologies like REST APIs and JSON. FHIR is designed to be easier to implement than older HL7 standards and supports mobile applications. India's ABDM uses FHIR-based APIs for health data exchange.

ADT

Admission, Discharge, Transfer

The core hospital workflow module that manages patient movement — from initial admission through ward transfers to final discharge. ADT tracking ensures accurate bed management, census reporting, and continuity of care. It's a fundamental component of any hospital information system.

LIS

Laboratory Information System

Software that manages laboratory workflows including sample collection, test processing, result entry, and report generation. LIS integrates with lab analyzers to auto-capture results and with HMS for order management. It ensures accurate, timely lab reporting and maintains quality control records.

RIS

Radiology Information System

Software that manages radiology department workflows including exam scheduling, image tracking, reporting, and billing. RIS integrates with PACS for image management and with HMS for order entry. It streamlines the radiology workflow from order to final report delivery.

HIS

Hospital Information System

Another term for Hospital Management Software, sometimes used interchangeably with HIMS. HIS encompasses all digital systems used to manage hospital operations, clinical workflows, and administrative processes. The term is more common in international healthcare contexts.
